The purpose of writing this essay is to elaborate and explain the abundance or benefits of month of Ramadan. On 24th of September 2006, Muslims in Malaysia will be celebrating the coming of first Ramadan. This holy month is so special in Islam because Muslims are compelled to fast for one month except for the people who could not do so such as for the old man, children, sick people, and the labor who do physical work. Ramadan Al-Mubarak means that the month is full with benefits, holy, and abundance of rahmat from Allah s.w.t. It gives the thousand of meanings for Muslims. He or she who does the right things, Allah s.w.t will give him a present or pahala and their lives will get the rahmat and barakah. Ramadan is extensively quoted in Al-Quran. There are also stated that many great events were happened during the Ramadan for instance the night of Lailatul Qadr, certain wars between Muslims and Kuffar, and the existence of Al-Quran. In Ramadan, it has the one holy night when whoever prays that night will get a huge, massive present from Allah in term of benefits in the world or the world after. The night of Lailatul Qadr as explained in Al-Quran is full of benefits whereby anyone who prays on that night are just like praying in 1000 months and Allah will forgive all their sins. For the Muslims who have done the fasting session, they will fill the happiness in eating session. In conclusion, Ramadan is the month where there are many benefits for whom who are fasting and did the right things sincerely with the intention because of Allah s.w.t.

COURTESY

Courtesy, it is something that should be possessed by all the people in this world. It is the sense of feeling that will certainly give both the sender and the receiver many benefits. Despite of getting these benefits, of late young Malaysian adult in Malaysia have been said to lack courtesy. Why is this happening? Maybe is this because they have less teaching about courtesy, second is maybe because they are too exposed to western lifestyle and lastly maybe because of their status. First and foremost, the reason when young Malaysian adult has become discourteous is because they have been taught less about courtesy. Their parent may have taught them many things such as how to pursue studies, how to be an independent person, how to manage their lives. But they have forgotten to include the teaching of courtesy such as polite behaviour toward people or showing respect for other people. This parent feel that they can learn courtesy by themselves once they are matured, but it is a mistake because courtesy is something that needs to be nurtured and developed in their children since they are still young. Secondly, young Malaysian adult nowadays are more likely to be influences by western way of life. In this modern technology, everyone can get information about anything in this world by just logging into the internet, watching television and many other ways, these sources of information can be good and sometimes can be negative such as violence, pornography and others. These information may be suitable for the western but not for Malaysian who have been taught many good values such as respecting people or polite behaviour towards people since they were still children. Third and lastly, maybe the factors of status can also cause young Malaysian adults to lack courtesy. This is because, when the young adults feel that they are rich and have the authority to decide something without anyone else’s point of view, they will become a snobbish person. Once they are in this type of situation, their feeling of courtesy toward others becoming less and they will surely do what they want and when they want to without thinking about other people’ feelings such as them happy with what you are doing or they agree with you. Since Malaysia is a diverse country, all Malaysian should possess courtesy. This feelings should be shown toward each other at anytime and is widely shown in Malaysian daily life, this will ensure that we will live in a happy environment and the spirit of ‘Malaysia Boleh’ can be raised among Malaysians in heading towards a bright future.

EFFECTS OF HEAVY MARIJUANA USE ON LEARNING AND SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR

Research clearly demonstrates that marijuana has the potential to cause problems in daily life or make a person’s existing problems worse. Depression, anxiety, and personality disturbances have been associated with chronic marijuana use. Because marijuana compromises the ability to learn and remember information, the more a person uses marijuana the more he or she is likely to fall behind in accumulating intellectual, job, or social skills. Moreover, research has shown that marijuana’s adverse impact on memory and learning can last for days or weeks after the acute effects of the drug wear off. Students who smoke marijuana get lower grades and are less likely to graduate from high school, compared with their non-smoking peers. A study of 129 college students found that, among those who smoked the drug at least 27 of the 30 days prior to being surveyed, critical skills related to attention, memory, and learning were significantly impaired, even after the students had not taken the drug for at least 24 hours. These “heavy” marijuana abusers had more trouble sustaining and shifting their attention and in registering, organising, and using information than did the study participants who had abused marijuana no more than 3 of the previous 30 days. As a result, someone who smokes marijuana everyday may be functioning at a reduced intellectual level all of the time. More recently, the same researchers showed that the ability of a group of long-term heavy marijuana abusers to recall words from a list remained impaired for a week after quitting, but returned to normal within 4 weeks. Thus, some cognitive abilities may be restored in individuals who quit smoking marijuana, even after long-term heavy use. Workers who smoke marijuana are more likely than their co-workers to have problems on the job. Several studies associate workers’ marijuana smoking with increased absences, tardiness, accidents, workers’ compensation claims, and job turnover. A study among postal workers found that employees who tested positive for marijuana on a pre employment urine drug test had 55% more industrial accidents, 85% more injuries, and a 75% increase in absenteeism compared with those who tested negative for marijuana use. In another study, heavy marijuana abusers reported that the drug impaired several important measures of life achievement including cognitive abilities, career status, social life, and physical and mental health.

THE SPORT OF MY CHOICE: CHEERLEADING

The purpose of writing this composition is to describe about cheerleading. I was a cheerleader back in high school. The reason I became a cheerleader is because I was a gymnast and I have been watching cheerleading on ESPN and it really caught my eye. Furthermore, cheerleading in my former high school was and still a popular school activity. My school supports cheerleading as we make the school proud. Having school spirit makes me want to join even more. I have been trained since I was 13 and I’m proud to say that I was the cheerleading captain in 2004 and was also crowned as the national champion that year. People always think that we just go for popularity as you always see in the movies. But they are wrong, I have tried a few sports and I think cheerleading is the toughest. You need to have stamina to nail a 2.5 minutes routine consisting gymnastics skills, stunts, pyramids, cheer and dance. And while doing all that, we still manage to smile through it out. In conclusion, cheerleading keeps you fit and will also boost your confident to face the crowd. It is a good sport and I am happy to see cheerleading in Malaysia is improving every year.

After I arrived, I could not believe what I saw. There was a most tragic accident happened here. There was blood everywhere on the road. The accident happened between the luxury cars, Toyota Harrier, with a Mini Cooper. There were four people in the Toyota Harrier and a couple in the other car. The Mini Cooper was crushed and I saw the Toyota’s driver was stuck at the driver’s seat. The other three people were seriously injured. There so many people around the accident place. Some of them helped the victim and called the ambulance. Around ten minutes after, the ambulance and the police arrived. After that, I went to my house and told everything to my family. TWO TEACHERS WHO HAVE MADE LASTING IMPRESSION ON ME

The purpose of writing this composition is to describe about two teachers who have made a lasting impression on me. I have two teachers who made a lasting impression on me. They were my History and English teachers. They were Miss Chan and Mrs. Thanamani respectively. Miss Chan was in her forties at the time but she did not look her age. She was a tall woman, about 1.78 meters, slim and had very short hair that barely touched her neck. She never changed her hairstyle and never let her hair grow.Miss Chan did not wear skirt and blouse but a straight-cut dress. My first impression would have been that she is a strict teacher with no sense of humour. But she had a fine sense of humour and when she smiled she looked very sweet. She was a very dedicated teacher. She always prepared her lessons very well. Her lessons were conducted in a systematic way and her explanations were very clear.Mrs. Thanamani was the exact opposite of Miss Chan. She was short, about 1.53 metres tall and was fond of trying all kinds of hairstyles. She was very beautiful and she smiled all at the time. Her jokes were hilarious and very seldom did we take offence at her more sarcastic comments. The only thing she had in common with Miss Chan was her dedication to teaching. Her English lessons involved a lot of activities, which required our active participation. It was her way of making us feel confident and comfortable in speaking and writing the language.Even though it has been two years since I left school, I still remember these two teachers because they have made a lasting impression on me.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF RICE

The purpose of writing this composition is to describe about rice. In my native language, there are six words for rice. We use different words to describe where the rice seed is planted, the colour of the harvested rice, and whether or not rice is cooked. For example, ‘padi’ refers to the rice seed. If the rice is planted in a field, we can call it ‘padi sawah’, and if it is planted on a hill, we can call it ‘padi huma’. In my country, farmers who live in the higher regions of Malaysia produce ‘padi huma’, while those who live in the lower elevations produce ‘padi sawah’. We can differentiate these two by their colours. ‘Padi sawah’ is gold, while ‘padi huma’ is reddish brown. Moreover, ‘padi sawah’ needs more water to grow than ‘padi huma’. Both ‘padi huma’ and ‘padi sawah’ only refer to rice grain. We call uncooked rice ‘beras’, and the cooked rice ‘nasi’. For example, my mother tells me to cook the ‘beras’ so that we can have ‘nasi’ for dinner. ‘Pulut’ is another name for ‘nasi’ or cooked rice, the difference between these two ‘pulut’ is starchier compared to ‘nasi’, and it is naturally sweeter when cooked. In conclusion, having more than one word for rice in our language indirectly reflects our culture, because Malaysia, rice is our staple food. We have rice everyday, and maybe that is the reason we have so many words for rice.

A TRIP TO CAMERON HIGHLANDS

The purpose of writing this composition is to tell about a trip to Cameron Highlands. Last month, my friends and I decided to go to Cameron Highlands. I was so excited because I have never been there before. I talked to my parents to get their permission and they allowed me to go to Cameron Highlands with my friends. I tried to get money from my mother but she did not have money at that time so I went to the bank and withdrew RM300 from my father’s account. 2 days before our trip, Faten told me that our friends could not make it because they had their own businesses and half of them had been working. I was disappointed because the main purpose of our trip was to hang out with each other. Therefore, we decided to go to Cameron Highlands as we planned. I became more excited because our trip was just around the corner. I slept early that night because I had to be at Puduraya by 8am. Therefore I woke up at 6am I received a message from my friend, Rizal. He told me he was not able to go because he was not feeling well. I was so angry because he did not tell me earlier. At first, I didn’t want to go but I felt pity to my friend, Faten because she was really excited to hang out with me. In conclusion, we were disappointed because at the end only two persons went to Cameron Highlands. They told me, they did not want to go for another trip with us anymore because they were disappointed with our response.

A JOURNEY TO REMEMBER

The purpose of writing this composition is to tell about my journey to Malacca. My friends and I went to Malacca last weekend. We did not plan anything but suddenly got an idea to walk around Mahkota Parade. We rented a car and reached there at 7 pm. To be honest, I drove the car without my license. Luckily, we reached Mahkota Parade safely. As we entered the mall, we went to the bowling centre first. Only four of us wanted to play bowling. The rest just sat down and watched us playing. After having fun, we went to best fast food ever that is McDonalds. I ate Fillet-O-Fish and had ice lemon tea as my beverage. For dessert, I bought a chocolate sundae. Then, we decided to go to Pantai Puteri. I was so excited when we reached Pantai Puteri because I have never been to the beach at night. We sat on the sand and watched the night scenery of the sea. We spent about twenty minutes on the beach. On the way back to UiTM, we got lost! We were so nervous and panicked. We tried to get back to UiTM. Finally we arrived at UiTM at 10.45 pm. The security guard asked us so many questions. Luckily, he did not get angry at us. He warned us to make sure that this incident would not happen again.

In a nutshell, this was a journey to be remembered though!

THE PERSON WHOM I ADMIRE

The purpose of writing this composition is to describe about the person whom I admire. The person whom I admire most is our former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohammad. He has inspired me a lot in many ways. I believe that I am not the only person who admires him, there might also be others who admire him. In my opinion, Tun or familiarly known as “Dr. M” is a very special and unique man. He seems to be so perfect and as a leader, I considered him a leader with a complete package. He is smart, intellectual, and accountable, determined, dedicated, and possesses many other positives attitudes. Dr. Mahathir did not study law or any course related to politics before. In fact, he studied medicine in Singapore. He had sacrificed his ambition as a doctor once he decided to join United Malay National Organization (UMNO). He joined UMNO through an invitation by Tun Abdul Razak. Even though, he had no experience in politics and was being involved into UMNO at the very young age, he never tended to give up. This has shown his spirit towards the party. He is said to be determined as he always try to improve the Malaysian economics, for example by developing industrial sector. He had contributed a lot of things to Malaysia and I considered the most valuable contribution made by him could be at the time when Malaysia faced an economic crisis due to inflation time in 1997. He managed to control the situation and did not borrow loan from International Monetary Fund as many other countries did. He has been as a Prime Minister’s position for 22 years. In conclusion, all efforts and contributions made by him have impressed and inspired me a lot. Even though, I cannot transform all his positive attitudes, at least I can absorb a few of them and practices it my life.

Message from the Editor

Dear Colleagues,

I am proud and honoured to be given this chance by Professor Sa’aban Salim to be the editor for Imagination Redefined and I would like to thank all of those involved in making this newsletter publication a reality. As the editor, I do not look at this project as a newsletter but more as an opportunity to make a great impact on us . As a student myself, I have always acknowledge the importance of the English language in our everyday lives. Sadly, I have come to realize that many of us are not aware or neglect that fact and take lightly the importance. As less than 15% of the world’s population uses English, the number certainly do not indicate how important English is as a world language. The importance of English is not just in how many people speak it but in what it is used for. English is the major language of news and information in the world. It is the language of business and government even in some countries where it is a minority language. It is even the language of maritime communication and international air traffic control. It is my hope that the students of UiTM will benefit from Imagination Redefined and hopefully this publication will be influential enough to motivate us to always improve our verbal and writing skills in the English language.

“Everybody has a chance of getting somewhere someday. If you really want it badly, you have to start today”

Yours truly,
